TILOS is a fully functional Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling tool. That is, you can do all your project scheduling inside TILOS if you wish. However, there are some highly misleading claims made about TILOS in the marketplace. You are not compelled to do your scheduling inside TILOS. You can edit your schedule data in the tool of your choice and then share that task data with TILOS for presentation purposes. In fact, most people start off this way with TILOS.

Once your task data is inside TILOS you are likely to identify issues and opportunities in the schedule that were extremely difficult to detect in the Gantt chart tool. TILOS goes further than identifying risks. You can then easily edit the schedule to create an optimised plan inside TILOS. In fact, you can have TILOS calculate certain optimised plans for you. You can also easily do scenario testing within TILOS and instantly see the consequences of changes. You are then using TILOS as your planning tool. In addition, you may export the optimised plan back out to your Gantt chart tool to continue planning in your tool of choice.

The next stage is to use TILOS to track your progress during the project. This may become vital for several reasons including for claims analysis. Here again, you can do this all in TILOS, but you can also use TILOS in conjunction with a Gantt chart tool. TILOS will not compel you to use it in a certain manner.

TILOS integrates with Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Asta Powerproject and many other tools. Ask us today to give you a short webinar to learn more about how these scheduling tools can work together to give you the best of both worlds.

We are pleased to announce TILOS version 9.0 time and location-planning software for highways, railways, pipelines, tunnels, water engineering, and transmission line construction and other linear civil engineering projects. Trimble® TILOS mass haul and location planning software, merges technical and schedule information into one dynamic plan, giving users more information than Gantt charts or network diagrams alone. The new version of TILOS offers better linear construction project visualization, makes mass haul planning simpler and improved integration with Primavera project management software and Trimble Business Center - HCE office software for heavy civil construction takeoff and data preparation.

Structured Gantt Chart

Trimble TILOS versio

Trimble TILOS version 9.0 mass haul software, introduces a new Gantt chart format that visually connects the site layout with the user-defined time frame of a project. Graphics representing project locations such as bridges, culverts and intersections as well as work types such as concrete, steel or earthworks provide additional clarity, making the plan more intuitive and easier to read at a glance. The new grouping and formatting represent the schedule in a digital wall chart format, which is frequently used in lean production to show progress in a simplified manner. In addition, TILOS can now plan and manage non-linear parts of the infrastructure project for a complete solution.

Improved Integration

To simplify data exchange, TILOS version 9.0, mass haul software, has been redesigned to improve the integration functionality with third-party project management software such as Primavera, Microsoft Project and ASTA Powerproject. The improved integration allows users to import detailed activity data that includes structures. TILOS version 9.0 also now works directly with the Primavera P6 native .xml file type with no API needed for seamless conversion to a linear schedule in TILOS.

Tighter integration with Trimble's Business Center - HCE, office mass haul software for construction takeoff and data preparation, gives users the ability to easily and quickly convert a mass haul plan created in Business Center - HCE into a linear construction schedule in TILOS. Using these optimized mass haul plans, which calculate the volume of the material multiplied by the distance it is moved during construction, can enable users to create the schedule with more accurate results in less time.

Rolling out in Australasia now

Some early adopters in Australia have already been using Tilos 9 mass haul software. We anticipate that P6 users will appreciate the must simpler integration with Primavera. The API is no longer required as the task data can be shared directly with the P6 client application.

For early adopters, please note that there has just been a new patch release of version 9. This includes some significant enhancements to progress and also to the integration with P6. Contact Delta Solutions for the patch.

Delta Solutions have written an upgrade guide to make the process as smooth as possible. We are now in the process of rolling out the Tilos 9 mass haul software upgrade to all clients with a valid SSM agreement.

As previously announced in March, Trimble Navigation acquired Linear Project - the developers of TILOS Linear Planning. Timble is a $2.5 billion company. The Heavy Civil Construction division provides hardware and software to assist the construction of road and rail infrastructure.

TILOS fills a gap in the suite of products that Trimble supplies to the Heavy Civil Construction market. Tilos already integrated with Trimble Business Center so that mass haulage data can be fed directly into Tilos to create the schedule. The acquisition will allow development of Tilos to accelerate, particularly further integration into the suite of tools from Trimble.

TILOS will continue to be represented in Australia and New Zealand by Delta Solutions Pty Ltd. This is partly in recognition that many Tilos users are in other industries such as the pipeline industry and we remain committed to serving the needs of all Tilos users. We have already begun collaborating with Trimble and their existing network of Heavy Civil Construction resellers.

Here is what Timble and Linear Project had to say on the acquisition:

"TILOS software is a significant addition to our corridor solutions portfolio. With the addition of TILOS, Trimble can better address the needs of project owners, engineers and civil contractors by enabling them to closely manage operations and execute their projects on schedule and within budget," said Alan Sharp, business area director for Trimble Heavy Civil Construction software solutions. "The Linear project team brings a wealth of experience and an expansive customer base that includes many of the world's largest contractors and rail network operators. We are very excited to have them join Trimble."

"Linear project's TILOS software is used for linear scheduling of large infrastructure projects for rail, road, tunnel and pipeline projects. We now have the opportunity to leverage Trimble's geospatial technologies to record jobsite progress automatically. The addition of TILOS to Trimble's Heavy Civil Construction portfolio gives us the ability to collectively work on a more robust solution for linear infrastructure planning, execution and production control," said Hubert Geier, owner of Linear project.
